Hotel Charitone is Almost Finished

Pictured is a view of the front of the Hotel Charitone building which is nearing completion.  The final inspections of the apartments are being done right now and they should be ready to open around January 1st.  (Bill Howes photo)

All 12 apartments have been reserved and the tenants are now signing leases.
Right now workers are working on the north tenant entrance, which should also be done by January 1.  They're also working on final inspections of the elevator.  There are four apartments on each of the second, third and fourth floors.  On each of these floors there are three two-bedroom apartments and one one-bedroom apartment.  The rent for the apartments ranges from $600 a month to $950 a month.  This includes most utilities  such as water, gas and electric.
The ground floor will have both the restaurant and lounge.  The restaurant is called Hy-Vee Market Grill and the hope is that it will be done in March 2014.

Ugly Sweater Contest

Chariton Leader, December 10, 2013
Sandra Knebel, Staff Writer

This year's Ugly Sweater contest will be flashy fun.  The fourth annual Ugly Sweater Contest will be held Thursday, Dec 19, from 5:30 p.m to 9:00 p.m.  Judging will be at 7 p.m.  Sponsored by the Chariton Area Chamber/Main Street.  The event will be hosted for the fourth time by and at the Office bar on the west side of the Square.  Additional sponsors are Hy-Vee, who provides the hors d'oruvres, and Mosaic, who is partnering with the Office to provide prizes for the first, second and third place winners.  Everyone is welcome to attend this flashy event.
Shantel Dow, Executive Director of the Chamber/Main Street said there are no entrance fees for the contests other than an ugly sweater.
"While it is technically a Christmas party and the judges may lend favor to that theme, contestants don't actually have to wear a holiday sweater, she said.  "It can be anything - so long as it is ugly enough to wow the judges.  And the contestants must wear the sweater during the Office party.  They can take it off after they leave if they are too embarrassed, but I think seeing such a fun sweater walking down the street will make anyone who sees it laugh and loosen up as well."
Dow added that there were about two-dozen contestants last year mingling with the crowd at The Office who came to enjoy the spirit of the season.  "The competition gets tougher each year as the party gains in popularity," she said.
Asked if she had any tips, Dow said the imagination works best.  However, to get inspired she suggested visiting a thrift store to find an ugly sweater that is a particularly bright, obnoxious color and start from there.  You can add bells or garland or a string of lights.  Poke arm holes in a Christmas tree skirt.  Paste silver tinsel all over a sweater.  Because Ugly Christmas Sweater contests are a current craze, you can even go online to find great ideas.
