Preparations for the Third Annual Hay Bale Art Contest are underway!  This event has grown quickly in popularity - from 17 entries drawing about 1,000 visitors the first year to 26 entries drawing 1,500 visitors last year.  "We want to break both records this year," says Lyle Asell, President of Tourism Lucas County and Contest committee chair.
"This contest is a great draw for tourists who are drawn to Lucas County to see the amazing creativity of our residents and then, while they are here, to shop and eat in our restaurants.  Designing and building these whimsical works of art is great fun for families, businesses and organizations.  And last, but not least, the use of hay bales is a great way to acknowledge the importance of forages in Lucas County, both economically and environmentally," he added.
To make participation easy, for those without their own supply of hay, the committee will connect those interested with a hay supplier and also assist in finding an appropriate location for the decorated bale.  Participant entry forms are now available at the office of the Chariton Area Chamber/Main Street.  The rules are simple, your art must be made of hay.
